Asia Pacific Digital Identity Consortium (APDI) was officially inaugurated in Hakone, Japan.
The Asia Pacific Digital Identity Consortium (APDI), the region’s first international organization dedicated to cross-border digital identity, hosted its inauguration today in Hakone, Japan. Founding members DNP (Japan) and Turing Space (Taiwan), along with core members Accredify (Singapore), LORDSYSTEM (South Korea), and ZADA Solutions (Myanmar), convened to discuss field tests for digital identity verification across 36 countries. Plans are underway to onboard representative teams and organizations from all countries in the region by 2025. APDI aims to foster a secure and trustworthy digital ecosystem, positioning itself as a counterpart to the European Union’s European Digital Identity (EUDI) Regulation, and ultimately building a transnational digital identity economic zone.
A New Era for Regional Cooperation and Innovation
APDI is committed to promoting secure and reliable digital identity and credential exchange systems. The organization’s mission is to establish standardized frameworks and governance structures to support real-world collaborations. It plans to onboard representatives from 36 countries in the region by 2025, facilitating practical cross-border use cases and focusing on migrant workers, travelers, and overseas students as initial pilot groups.
During the inauguration, members agreed on a roadmap for enhancing regulatory alignment among countries, fostering technical cooperation, inviting governments to serve as advisors, and fostering dialogue with digital identity-related organizations.
Addressing Critical Challenges in the Digital Age
The rapid rise of generative AI has increased risks such as data forgery, leakage, and identity theft, making secure digital identity verification a critical issue worldwide. While the EU has taken steps through the EUDI Regulation, the Asia-Pacific region faces unique challenges, including cultural and linguistic diversity, fragmented systems, and uneven digital infrastructure. APDI seeks to address these challenges by becoming a gateway connecting the Asia-Pacific with global digital trust initiatives.
Core Values of APDI
APDI’s establishment represents a significant milestone for the region, with the potential to impact over half of the world’s population—4.78 billion people across 36 countries. Its initiatives are built on three core values:
